Electronics in the system

Interview with Santiago Cobreces

The evolution of the power system is shifting grid stability toward a new paradigm. In an environment increasingly dominated by renewable generation and power electronics, traditional concepts such as inertia, damping, and dynamic response are being reinterpreted through new control and operational strategies.

In this interview, Javier Serrano, engineer at Norvento TECHnPower, speaks with Santiago Cobreces, a professor and researcher at the University of Alcalá, about the role that grid-forming converters, synthetic inertia, and advanced control will perform in the electrical systems of the future. The conversation explores how power electronics is enabling the development of more flexible, resilient, and adaptable grids capable of responding to the challenges of an energy transition based on renewable generation.

Santiago Cobreces

Santiago Cobreces holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and is a professor and researcher at the University of Alcalá, where he works in the field of power electronics applied to electrical systems. His research has focused on advanced converter control, grid-forming systems, power quality, and stability in electrical systems dominated by power electronics.

Throughout his career, he has participated in numerous research projects related to the integration of renewable energy, microgrids, and new control architectures for modern power grids. His work focuses particularly on the dynamic analysis of converters and the development of control strategies capable of improving the stability, flexibility, and resilience of power systems with high renewable energy integration.
