Network intelligence

Interview to Pablo Arboleya

We start the first interview of the year by exploring one of the most transformative concepts in the way we understand and operate the electricity system: grid intelligence. Increasing digitalization, ubiquitous monitoring, advanced automation and the massive integration of power electronics have meant that the stability of the system no longer depends solely on physics, but also on software.

To introduce us to this new paradigm, we have an exceptional guest: Pablo Arboleya, a professor at the University of Oviedo, co-founder of the LEMUR group, SmartCities Chair of Gijón and co-founder of Plexigrid. He has an impressive international career that includes positions at institutions such as the University of Illinois, UBC, La Sapienza and the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers in Paris. He is now one of the most influential voices in digitalization, smart network management and advanced electrical system operation.

In this conversation, moderated by Víctor Sánchez, Power Electronics Engineer at Norvento TECHnPower, we will discuss how grid stability has changed in an environment where information flows faster than energy, sensors observe in real time what was previously invisible, and algorithms actively participate in decision-making.

Pablo Arboleya

He is a professor at the University of Oviedo, where he obtained his degree in Engineering and his PhD in Electrical Engineering in 2001 and 2005, respectively. He heads the Plexigrid Chair at the University of Oviedo, which focuses on research and training in electrical systems. He was also the driving force behind and coordinator of the Erasmus Mundus STEPS (Sustainable Transportation and Electrical Power Systems) Master’s programme.

Pablo is co-founder and CTO of Plexigrid, where they develop innovative software for electrical distribution network operators. In 2022, he received the Outstanding Engineer Award from the Spanish Chapter of IEEE PES for his work in modern distribution networks.

Pablo also serves as editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Electrical Power & Energy Systems, among other editorial roles. He is passionate about bringing technological innovation to the energy sector and training the next generation of engineers
