Resilient networks

Interview to Javier Roldán

The growing electrification and large-scale integration of renewable energy are transforming how we think about the resilience of the electricity system. In this new landscape, microgrids, power electronics and advanced control systems are emerging as essential components for ensuring a secure and flexible supply that is capable of adapting to increasingly complex disturbances.

In this interview, Adolfo Ausín, Head of Power Electronics at Norvento TECHnPower, speaks with Javier Roldán, a Ramón y Cajal researcher at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, who holds a PhD in Systems Modelling from the Pontifical University of Comillas and is one of Spain’s leading experts in the integration of power electronics converters, power system stability and grid-forming systems. Javier has taken part in numerous research projects relating to the energy transition and the evolution of electricity systems during his research career at institutions such as the Institute for Technological Research (IIT), IMDEA Energía, and the UPM.

The discussion examines how microgrids, grid-forming converters and new control strategies are enabling the development of more resilient, decentralized and autonomous grids, capable of maintaining stability even in isolated or industrial environments, or those with a high degree of renewable energy generation.

Javier Roldán

He holds a PhD in Systems Modelling from the Pontifical University of Comillas and is currently a Ramón y Cajal researcher at the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Throughout his career, he has carried out research at institutions such as the Institute for Technological Research (IIT), IMDEA Energy and the UPM, specializing in the integration of power electronics converters, the stability of electricity grids and grid-forming systems.

His research focuses on developing new control strategies to improve the resilience and stability of electricity systems with a high level of renewable energy integration.
