Solar Storms

Interview with Jesús Aguado Molina

The power grid must address the challenges posed by the energy transition and be prepared to cope with natural phenomena that can disrupt its global operations. Solar storms are a rare threat with enormous potential to impact electrical infrastructure and energy transmission systems.

In this interview, María Adrián, Product Manager at Norvento TECHnPower, speaks with Jesús Aguado Molina – who holds a Ph.D. from the University of Alcalá and specializes in interplanetary physics and space weather – about how solar activity can affect the stability of power grids and what mechanisms exist to anticipate and mitigate its effects

The conversation explores the origin of geomagnetic storms, how they interact with Earth, and their potential consequences for transformers, transmission lines, and large-scale electrical systems. They also discuss the forecasting tools and strategies that will enable the construction of more resilient grids in the face of one of the most complex natural risks to the modern electrical system.

Jesús Aguado Molina

He holds a bachelor’s degree in physical sciences from the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid and a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Alcalá. He obtained his European Doctorate with a dissertation focused on the physics of the interplanetary medium and the study of solar storms. During his research career, he was a member of the Space Research Group at the University of Alcalá, participating in national and European projects on space weather and collaborated with international groups that specialize in Sun-Earth interactions. He is currently a faculty member at the Cardenal Cisneros University Center, where he combines teaching with science outreach. His work has given him a deep understanding of solar activity and its impact on critical infrastructure, such as power grids.
