The Territorial Head of the Regional Ministry of Economy, Employment and Industry in Lugo witnesses the use of the most innovative system for transporting blades, used by Norvento for the first time in Spain, called bladelifter

  • Norvento has used bladelifter transport for the construction of its wind farms in Lugo, for the first time in Spain, an innovative method that significantly reduces the environmental impact.
  • The new Norvento wind farms, capable of generating 128.25 MW and avoiding the emission of 4 million tons of CO2 per year, will be completed in the next few days.

Lugo,11th October 2019.- Pilar Férnández López, Territorial Head of the Regional Ministry of Economy, Employment and Industry in Lugo, has witnessed today the use of the most innovative system for transporting blades, bladelifter, used by Norvento for the first time in Spain. Iván Nogueiras Pérez, Managing Director of Norvento, accompanied and guided the Territorial Manager during her visit.

The main reason for the visit of the Territorial Manager was to see first-hand the use, for the first time in Spain, of the transport of blades by bladelifter. This innovative method allows, thanks to the use of special machinery, to significantly reduce the environmental impact, as the transport of the blades can be carried out on narrower roads and tracks, with tighter curves. This avoids modifications to the environment that are sometimes unavoidable, such as the road widening, opening of new roads, removal of communication poles, or occasional felling of some trees along the roadside.

This reduces the need for civil works and the environmental impact in the construction of wind farms. The technique also makes it possible to transport larger blades. Until now, this technique has been used in other countries to transport blades of up to 60 metres in length: now, the figure has increased to 80 metres.

Using this method, Norvento has speeded up the completion of its new wind farms in the province of Lugo, minimising their environmental impact, and is one of the first developers to use this technique not only in Spain and Portugal, but also in Europe as a whole. Norvento has collaborated with Vestas and Laso, wind turbine technologist and transporter, respectively, in the use of bladelifter blade transport.

Last construction days of Norvento’s 6 new wind farms in Galicia

The assembly of the last two wind turbines of Norvento’s six new wind farms in Galicia is expected to be completed in the next few days, months before the deadline for the execution of the projects. Norvento has worked in recent months on the completion of the new wind farms in Lugo, which represent a total of 128.25 MW of power. The farms, placed in Abadín, A Pastoriza, Mondoñedo, Riotorto, Trabada, A Pontenova and Lourenzá, will be ready to operate before 31st December and will produce an annual amount of energy equivalent to the electricity consumption of a municipality of 90,000 inhabitants.

Norvento thus maintains its commitment to sustainable development in Galicia, avoiding the emission of 4 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent during the useful life of the wind farms. In addition, the construction and operation of the projects will bring numerous benefits to the municipalities that host them: during their useful life, approximately 19 million euros will be generated for local and regional administrations in taxes.

The new wind farms will be monitored and managed both from the control centres located in the wind farms themselves and from the company’s headquarters in Lugo, the Norvento Energy Innovation Centre (CIne, by its Spanish acronym), one of the most advanced buildings in Europe in terms of independence and energy self-generation through renewable energies, and which operates totally disconnected from the electricity grid using clean energies.

Iván Nogueiras Pérez, Managing Director of Norvento, highlights that “after years of work, we are pleased to enter the last phase of construction of these projects, months before the deadline. Undoubtedly, the constant commitment to innovation and efficiency, as exemplified by the use of bladelifter transport, has been key to this.”
