Norvento opens the door to industrial battery energy storage with the launch of nGM

  • The Norvento Gridmaster Converter (nGM), 100% designed and manufactured in Galicia, is the result of 3 years of intensive R&D in the field of power electronics.
  • The nGM is an electronic power converter that allows the integration of energy storage systems using batteries in industry.
  • It also incorporates the ability to be integrated into off-grid installations as an intelligent micro-grid controller, a new feature in the market.
  • The device is already available after having been installed in several pilot projects, including off-grid livestock farms in Galicia.

New Norvento Gridmaster Converter, or nGM

Lugo, 16th July 2020.- Norvento, a Spanish renewable technologies company, has launched a new power electronics product aimed at industrial-scale energy storage systems. The electronic converter, called the Norvento Gridmaster Converter or nGM, is capable of managing the energy exchange between the grid and a battery system, and can operate in both grid-connected and off-grid installations. It is expected that energy storage projects with batteries will experience significant development in the near future, similar to what is happening in the field of mobility.

Norvento is reinforcing its capabilities in the field of energy storage, which will play an increasingly important role in the sector due to its complementary role in renewable energy projects. Storage is expected to grow in large generation facilities as well as in the field of self-consumption, distributed energy, microgrid projects and isolated systems in places where it is not easy to access the grid, such as remote livestock farms, pumping systems for irrigation, or rural electrification in developing countries.

The nGM converter is highly versatile, offering the functionalities that allow it to adapt to both on-grid and off-grid installations, as it integrates a system that can take control of various elements within a microgrid, such as other sources of renewable generation or interconnection with the grid. It can also cover a very wide power range thanks to its modular design, which allows it to integrate storage systems from 50 kW to 2 MW. It has been designed for autonomous operation with real-time remote monitoring via Internet of Things or IoT technology, which significantly simplifies its maintenance.

Norvento Gridmaster Converter (nGM), a “brain” for off-grid systems

The product not only serves as an interface between the grid and the storage system, but also enables intelligent management of other equipment, including solar photovoltaic, wind, diesel groups, or the grid connection switch. A controller is incorporated that monitors these elements at all times and commands them to optimise their operation and ensure the quality of the energy supplied by the grid at all times.

Some examples of use are farms, mines, isolated industries, hybrid self-consumption systems with batteries and photovoltaic, electric vehicle charging stations, or facilities that require a high-quality, reliable supply, such as factories with critical processes, hospitals and data processing centres.

The device has been designed and will be manufactured entirely in Galicia at Norvento’s factory in Villalba (Lugo), and is expected to serve both the domestic and foreign markets.

Juan Alberto Marrero, head of Norvento’s Power Electronics unit, stresses that “the existing renewable integration plans will increasingly demand more energy storage capacities, also at industrial level. This product offers a very reliable and simple way to make this possible. We also hope to be able to reach the world of rural electrification in developing countries.”

About Norvento

Norventois a Spanish renewable technologies company with a comprehensive capacity for action. Based in Lugo (Galicia), the company is 100% Spanish-owned and has been operating in the market for decades. The activities of Norvento cover manufacturing technology, design, promotion, building, and operation of centralised generated renewable energy facilities (mainly wind farms), generation for distributed generation for industry, and ad hoc energy engineering solutions for customers. With a presence in several international markets, Norvento currently has more than 250 MW of renewable generation plants in operation, more than 750 MW developed and more than 1,000 MW under development, both in Spain and in other markets.
