Norvento moves forward with construction work on the new wind farms in Galicia on schedule

Lugo, 11th June 2019.- Construction work on Norvento’s six new wind farms in Galicia is on schedule so that, as required by regulations, they will be ready to enter into operation before 31 st December 2019.

Norvento now has six wind farms under construction in Lugo associated with the projects that obtained retribution in the May 2017 electricity auction for a total of 128 MW of capacity. Specifically, they are located in seven municipalities in La Mariña Central area, in the province of Lugo: Abadín, A Pastoriza, Mondoñedo, Riotorto, Trabada, A Pontenova and Lourenzá.

At this moment, most of the work is focused on the construction of the evacuation substations and the installation of the wind turbine towers, after which the rest of the components, such as the gondolas and blades, will be shipped and assembled. Norvento thus confirms that it will meet the deadlines for the commissioning of the wind farms, which according to the legal bases of the May 2017 auction must be ready for operation before the end of 2019.

The wind turbines have been supplied by the manufacturers Vestas and SiemensGamesa and feature high efficiency with a unit power of between 3.3 and 3.6 MW, using rotors of up to 136 metres in diameter. The set of new projects that Norvento has under construction will produce approximately a year’s worth of energy equivalent to the electricity consumption of a municipality of 90,000 inhabitants, equal to the size of Pontevedra.

With these projects, Norvento maintains its commitment to Galicia and to environmental sustainability, avoiding with the electricity generated the emission of 4 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent into the atmosphere during the entire life of the wind farms.

According to the company’s estimates, during the construction stage, the projects will generate income of around 3 million euros for the municipalities that host them, which will come from municipal fees for licences and the construction, installations and works tax (ICIO, by its Spanish acronym). They will also generate a further 12 million euros for local and regional administrations for the rest of their useful life in the form of property and real estate tax, economic activity tax and the so-called wind tax.

Once up and running, Norvento’s new wind farms will be monitored and managed both from the control centres located at the farms and from the company’s headquarters inaugurated in 2018, known as the Norvento Enerxía Innovation Centre (CIne) in Lugo, which is one of the most advanced buildings in Europe in terms of energy independence and self-generation with renewables.

Over the forthcoming months, Norvento will continue to maintain, as it has done until now, close collaboration and information exchange with the different municipal corporations where the wind farms are located, as well as with the rest of the authorities of the territory and the Xunta (regional government) itself.
