Norvento Enerxía begins the shipment of its nED100 wind turbines to the Portuguese island of Corvo

  • Since last week, the company’s technological products have begun to leave its Vilalba factory for the Port of Leixões (Matosinhos), from where they will be shipped to the Azores.
  • This project, carried out for the Portuguese energy company EDA Renováveis, will supply part of the electricity needs of the northernmost island of the archipelago with renewable wind energy.
  • This initiative will improve the quality of electricity supplyfor the 400 inhabitants of the island and the hundreds of tourists who visit it every year.

Norvento Enerxía, leader in renewable energy and related technology, celebrates a new milestone in the transition to a sustainable future with the start of its ambitious wind energy project on the island of Corvo (Azores, Portugal) for the energy company EDA Renováveis. Last week, the Galician company began the transportation of its seven nED100 wind turbines to the Portuguese island from its factory in Vilalba (Lugo), to the Port of Leixões (Matosinhos, Portugal), from where they will embark in a month-long sea voyage to the Azores.

This project, the bulk of which will be assembled during the month of July, represents a significant step towards energy independence and a commitment to green energy in an area such as the island of Corvo, characterised by its difficult access and complex orography. This site is one of the most remote points in western Europe.

A logistical challenge

The logistics of transporting all the components of this wind farm are quite a challenge. The transfer of Norvento Enerxía’s medium power (100 kW) nED100 wind turbines, designed and manufactured in Spain, required careful prior planning with the parties involved in both countries.

The project, commissioned by Norvento Enerxía on a turnkey or EPC basis, will make it possible to install a total of 700 kW of wind power on the island. To this end, the Galician company will use these seven medium power wind turbines, in addition to its SCADA system for monitoring and controlling all the components of the wind farm.

Transition to renewable energy

For the 400 inhabitants of Corvo, this project represents a moment of transition from exclusive dependence on fossil fuels transported by sea to the adoption of an electricity supply from renewable sources.

Furthermore, the implementation of this wind infrastructure will reinforce the resilience of the island’s electricity system, reducing the risk of blackouts and providing greater stability and energy security for all citizens. This breakthrough not only marks a milestone in Corvo’s history, but also provides an inspiring example of how communities can adapt and thrive in harmony with the environment, fostering a more sustainable and prosperous future for generations to come.

Renewable energy, even in remote areas

This project adds to Norvento Enerxía’s growing list of initiatives in remote and difficult to access regions, where the combination of renewable technologies and energy storage systems is driving the transition to a more sustainable future. The company is committed to the energy development of these communities, as well as to the decarbonisation of their electricity systems, demonstrating the potential of renewable energy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and promote energy self-sufficiency in remote areas.

‘We are very proud to be able to improve people’s lives with our technology. This project is certainly ambitious, but we believe it also represents a step towards reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Bringing renewable energy to Corvo is a professional achievement for us. We are excited about the project’ says Juan Morilla, Operations Area Director of Norvento Enerxía.

The contract for the supply and installation of equipment for the wind farm on the island of Corvo falls under the sub-investment C14-i03.02-RAA – Corvo Renovável of the PRR – Recovery and Resilience Plan, with the aim of increasing the installed capacity of renewable energy, with the aim of producing 700 kW of wind energy on the island of Corvo.
