Norvento Enerxía’s energy storage system starts its operaton at CIUDEN’s Technology Development Centre

  • Norvento Enerxía’s nBESS system, which is made up of lithium-ion batteries, has a capacity of 600 kVA and 1,330 kW/h.
  • The installation marks an important milestone in the energy storage project of the Ciudad de la Energía Foundation (CIUDEN) in Cubillos del Sil (León).
  • As for Norvento Enerxía, there is a commitment to energy storage as the key to progress towards the decarbonisation of industry.

Norvento Enerxía, a Galician leader company in renewable and advanced energy solutions, has started the commissioning last January of the electrochemical energy storage system (nBESS) supplied to the facilities of the CIUDEN Technology Development Centre, located in Cubillos del Sil (León).

This innovative system, which has a capacity of 600 kVA and 1,330 kWh, is already in operation, marking an important milestone in CIUDEN’s energy storage and green hydrogen production project, framed within the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) and financed by the European Union’s Next Generation funds.

The entry into operation of the nBESS system reinforces the objective of the Energy City Foundation (CIUDEN), a state public sector entity belonging the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO) and attached to the Institute for Just Transition (ITJ), to become a benchmark in the research and validation of technologies related to green hydrogen generation and energy storage. This system will enable the development and testing of innovative solutions that will contribute to the transition towards a more sustainable and efficient energy model.

A key solution for the future energy model

The tender carried out by CIUDEN in October last year covered everything from the engineering and supply of components to civil works, maintenance during the warranty period and the final commissioning of the system. With the nBESS fully operational, CIUDEN is one step closer to achieving the integration of all the technologies that form part of the green hydrogen production and energy storage project, which will culminate at the end of the year and will make it a perfect platform for the demonstration of decarbonisation technologies for companies and society.

In terms of technological innovation, the nBESS is designed to ensure high performance in the long term. Its operational flexibility makes it an essential tool not only for testing and validation of green hydrogen generation projects, but also for advancing research into new applications related to the energy transition.

The entry into operation of this system highlights the crucial role of energy storage in the transition to a decarbonised energy model. Technologies such as nBESS are the basis for overcoming challenges such as the intermittency of renewable energies, improving energy efficiency and promoting self-sufficiency of industrial and residential facilities.

“At Norvento we believe that without energy storage, the transition to a more sustainable model is unfeasible. Projects such as the one developed with CIUDEN are an example of how innovation can provide solutions that will bring us closer to the goal of building a more energy efficient and committed planet”, said Juan Morilla, Operations Manager of Norvento Enerxía.

“CIUDEN has the challenge of supporting initiatives in research, development and innovation related to renewable energy generation, storage and minimisation of possible adverse effects on the environment, acting as a driver for the development of energy storage technologies and renewable hydrogen. This lithium-ion battery storage system that has just been commissioned will allow us to integrate it into a hybrid system and validate its technological potential,” said Javier Quiñones, executive manager of R&D&I at the Ciudad de la Energía Foundation.
