NORVENTO WILL EXPAND ITS SELF-CONSUMPTION BUSINESS WITH RENEWABLE ENERGY TO THE HOTEL SECTOR.

  • The company focuses on the hotel sector to expand and promote self-consumption in an industry where energy can account for up to 25% of an establishment’s operating expenses.
  • The nED 100 wind turbine, developed by Norvento, is specifically designed for medium power industrial self-consumption, and it is suitable for resorts or large hotel complexes due to its low environmental impact and high performance.

Madrid, 9th May 2017.- Norvento, a Spanish renewable technologies company with comprehensive performance capabilities, has initiated its expansion plan in the hotel sector, focusing on distributed generation and medium power self-consumption.

The hotel sector is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world, with an estimated 1.2 billion people travelling abroad each year, according to the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). This growth represents a major challenge for this sector in terms of energy, as the increase in tourists leads to an increase in the demand for energy resources and, therefore, an increase in expenditure. It should also be noted that the energy item is usually the highest after personnel costs. According to data from the consultancy firm PwC, energy costs can account for between 4% and 25% of the operating expenses of a hotel establishment.

To answer these new needs of the sector, Norvento has initiated an expansion plan to promote the installation of self-consumption energy systems in hotels, resorts, and hotel complexes. The self-consumption, or distributed generation, is based on the sustainable generation of electricity at the point of consumption. Norvento resolves this through the installation of renewable technologies such as wind, solar photovoltaic, or different bioenergies. By installing these types of systems, it is possible to reduce both the carbon footprint and the costs associated with energy.

Furthermore, incorporating measures that promote energy efficiency can lead to significant savings for the sector, but it is not the only benefit. In fact, 2017 marks the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, an event promoted by UNWTO to raise awareness of the benefits of promoting more sustainable tourism: more jobs, social inclusion and poverty reduction, efficient use of resources and environmental protection, among others.

In order to deploy its activity in this area, Norvento prioritises regions such as the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands or the Costa del Sol. These are regions where the density of the tourism sector is high, there are resorts with available space, and the sun and wind conditions are excellent. Manuel Pinilla, Sales Manager at Norvento, explains that “By incorporating renewable generation, the hotel sector has the opportunity to improve its results and also to show its contribution to the change in the energy model by reducing its environmental impact.”

The nED100 wind turbine, a solution for hotel resorts

One of the products designed by Norvento for distributed generation for medium-power consumption is the nED100 wind turbine. This turbine is ideal for resorts or large hotel complexes outside urban centres, since it is smaller in size than conventional wind turbines, so it does not require a large installation space and has a reduced visual impact. The turbine is also quiet, and thanks to its careful design and its mechanical and electrical efficiency, it reduces its maintenance needs to just one visit per year.

Furthermore, it can be monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, by Norvento’s control centre, so that the customer can disregard the technical requirements of the equipment.

These wind turbines have already been successfully operating in other countries like the United Kingdom, where Norvento has installed around 25 units, mainly in livestock cooperatives and port facilities. Its experience in this environment has been very positive and expectations are for growth, as the company plans to install 500 units over the next 10 years.

About Norvento
