Norvento moves into energy storage business with batteries for industrial self-consumption

  • The company has developed a new modular storage system based on plug-and-play lithium-ion batteries for industrial and commercial applications, with a capacity of between 50 and 800kWh and power ratings of between 50kVA and 400kVA.
  • These systems are especially useful in industries whose electricity consumption occurs at times when energy is most expensive, when they have surplus renewable generation in their self-consumption plants or when they experience high consumption peaks.

Lugo, 8th September 2020.- Norvento, a Spanish renewable technologies company, has announced the launch of its energy storage systems, intended specifically for industrial and commercial operations, thus complementing its value proposition of self-consumption systems. These new systems use lithium-ion batteries, a safe, efficient, high-cycle storage technology capable of reaching very high depths of discharge, similar to those used in electric vehicles and mobile phones.

The new systems have been designed with a “plug and play” approach, i.e. they are pre-configured for easy deployment by the user, so they can be incorporated directly into their installations without additional configurations that would hinder their immediate use. Their modular design facilitates their adoption for a wide range of use cases: the systems have a storage capacity of between 50 and 800kWh and power ratings of between 50kVA and 400kVA, covering different types of installations, from a small farm to a medium-consumption factory.

Among other applications, Norvento’s energy storage systems can be especially useful in cases such as:

  • Industrial and commercial facilities with electricity consumption predominantly at peak hours or with self-consumption systems with surpluses.
  • Installations with restrictions on power expansion where this would limit their growth.
  • Microgrids or off-grid systems that want to reduce diesel consumption.
  • Installations that require a reliable, continuous and quality electricity supply.

The storage systems are connected at all times to the Norvento Control Centre, from where all their activity is monitored. Thanks to the deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, users have access to all system data available on the cloud via a mobile app, allowing them to monitor the most relevant parameters of their batteries in real time. The systems also include an energy management system (EMS) for the scheduled dispatch of stored energy.

Energy storage, the key to renewable energy-based systems

Norvento’s new energy storage systems complement the recent launch of the nGM, a new power electronic converter developed by the company. Both the nGM and the new storage systems are designed to help companies optimise the use of their renewable energy generation systems, as battery storage will play an increasingly prominent role in the industrial market as technological advances facilitate its adoption.

Among other advantages, storage systems can reduce consumption peaks, supplying specific demands in installations and obtaining savings by reducing tolls for excess power, which are frequent in the production industry. Similarly, with the creation of the figure of the aggregator, the user can participate in the markets for auxiliary grid services, obtaining additional income. These systems also help the user to optimise the installation’s consumption curve. Finally, electrical storage systems with batteries are capable of helping to maintain the electricity supply to critical loads during grid losses and restore the grid without the need for an alternative source in the event of power supply losses, providing an emergency start-up mechanism.

Luis Jiménez, head of Norvento’s Solar Photovoltaic and Storage Department, highlights that “our new storage systems are a further step in the field of industry and distributed energy in which the ability to manage the use of electrical energy will play an increasingly important role both in what we know as the field of self-consumption and in large renewable generation. Battery systems will undoubtedly be a major ally in the coming years to help industry achieve its sustainability goals.”

About Norvento

Norventois a Spanish renewable technologies company with a comprehensive capacity for action. Based in Lugo (Galicia), the company is 100% Spanish-owned and has been operating in the market for decades. The activities of Norvento cover manufacturing technology, design, promotion, building, and operation of centralised generated renewable energy facilities (mainly wind farms), generation for distributed generation for industry, and ad hoc energy engineering solutions for customers. With a presence in several international markets, Norvento currently has more than 250 MW of renewable generation plants in operation, more than 750 MW developed and more than 1,000 MW under development, both in Spain and in other markets.
