Norvento presents their expansion strategy in the renewable energies market

  • The development of a portfolio of 597 MV and international expansion with energy generated for industry will be two of the main growth pillars of the company in the upcoming years.
  • Norvento covers the whole chain: from manufacturing aerogenerators to the design, promotion, building, and operation of the renewable energy facilities (mainly wind farms), the design and building of distributed generation and microgrids for industrial and business self-consumption, as well as engineering services to third parties.
  • The company is already present in the United Kingdom, Brazil, the United States, Poland and Italy. The upcoming international markets in which operations are expected to start are India, Africa, Central America and the Caribbean, which are regions with a great potential for industrial self-consumption, due to the absence of energy infrastructures.

Norvento, a Spanish renewable technology company with comprehensive performance capabilities, has presented today in Madrid their national and international expansion plan. With it, they intend to position themselves as one of the benchmark companies in the renewable energy market in the upcoming years.

Being 100% Spanish owned and with their headquarters in Galicia, Norvento has been active for 35 years, and it is already present in five international markets: the United Kingdom, Brazil, the United States, Poland, and Italy, as well as Spain. The company currently has 110 MW in operation, and a pipeline of 597 MW in diverse stages of development.

Their activities cover manufacturing technology, design, promotion, building, and operation of centrally generated renewable energy facilities (mainly wind farms), generation for distributed generation for industry, and ad hoc energy engineering solutions for customers.

Norvento has presented today in Madrid the main lines of their expansion strategy to position themselves among the leading companies in the business of renewable energies, both in our country and in the international market. The company currently combines a wide range of multi-renewable technology solutions, such as wind, photovoltaics, biogas and biomass, though it is the first one where Norvento is currently best positioned.

As explained this morning by Ivan Nogueiras, Energy Director at Norvento, the growth and expansion of the company will be given both by its traditional business, based on centralised energy generation (mainly wind farms); and by the business of distributed generation (industrial self-consumption). In other words, the one focused on medium energy consumption.

In the case of the traditional centralised generation business, the company will focus its activity in the short term on the full development of a project portfolio of 597 MW. Of this portfolio, 369 MW will be located in Spain (the vast majority in wind) and the remaining 228 MW in international markets such as the UK, Brazil and Poland. Norvento currently has 110 MW fully operational in Spain (94 MW in wind and 16 MW in hydro, biomass and solar photovoltaic).

But it is on the second major front, that of distributed generation for medium energy consumption, where the company intends to focus its international expansion.

Distributed generation (industrial self-consumption) and the new energy model

Norvento works in the development of technologies that empower industrial and business clients to incorporate the new models of energy production, management, and consumption, such as distributed generation (self-consumption) in and off the grid. This is the case of wind distributed energy, off-grid systems or microgrid systems (with multiple renewable technologies).

In fact, the first steps in wind distributed energy in countries like the United Kingdom have been successful. Since the beginning of the operations in this country in 2014, with the commercialisation of its own designed and manufactured nED wind turbine, 23 units have already been installed, mainly in livestock cooperatives. The company’s estimates put the figure at 500 nED wind turbines marketed over the next 10 years in the UK.

In terms of the development of the distributed business, there will be two main areas of focus. On the one hand, the development, and evolution of products and capacities (nED wind turbines, microgrid systems with multiple renewable technologies, integration of different energy storage technologies, etc.). Secondly, expansion in international markets.

In this last regard, Norvento has announced that the target regions where they intend to introduce and expand their business in distributed generation will consist of both fully electrified advanced economies and developing countries.

About the first, the presence of Norvento in the United Kingdom with wind distributed energy is a clear example of this opportunity. Thus, in advanced economies, the company will focus on agricultural and livestock farms, ports, industrial plants and estates, shopping centres, water pumping facilities and tourist resorts, among others.

Moreover, Norvento will also pay attention to developing countries, endowed with good energy resources (solar and wind), but with large areas lacking in supply. The absence of solid electricity infrastructures will lead the industrial fabric to opt for their energy generation and self-consumption systems. Some examples of such target markets for Norvento are India, Africa, Central America and the Caribbean.

The wind-based distributed energy is the one that Norvento intends to prioritise in its expansion plan for distributed energy. However, biogas facilities and microgrid and off-grid systems with various renewable energy sources will also be part of the company’s growth strategies. In fact, the microgrid systems will be the base to also boost the commercialisation of projects for self-sufficient corporate buildings, also known as zero-energy.

“Milestones such as the Paris Summit or the EU’s 20/20/20 objectives are favourable frameworks for expanding our business in distributed energy. We have our own technology, experience and capacity, and there are few operators specialised in distributed energy for medium energy consumption. We are ready to seize the opportunities of a huge market”, states Ivan Nogueiras, Energy Director at Norvento.

Worldwide, it is estimated that around 530 GW of distributed generation will be installed by 2024 (source: Navigant Research).

To stay at the forefront of the latest trends in renewable energies and continue developing technological solutions that respond to market demands, Norvento dedicates 10% of its revenues to R&D every year. At the end of 2015, the company’s turnover reached 28 million euros.

Main Norvento magnitudes (summary):

  • Current presence in 5 countries: Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, Brazil, Poland and Italy.
